Pruning pothos to encourage growth and a fuller plant (with video!)

March 1, 2025 by Julie, Houseplant Expert

Learn how to prune pothos to encourage growth and ultimately grow a fuller plant. I’ve outlined the basic steps below but be sure to check out the video tutorial for more in-depth tips!

The process is extremely simple. The most important part is to make sure to cut the stem in the right place. Nodes are the growth points on stems from where leaves, aerial roots, and other stems emerge.

If you want to encourage new growth and a fuller pothos, you must cut ABOVE a node. Point the pothos stem up towards the ceiling, find a node, and cut about a quarter inch above it. This will trigger that growth point on the mother plant to eventually put out new growth from that node.

That’s it! Easy, right? Remember to watch the video tutorial for more helpful details and examples. Now learn how to propagate the pothos stems that you cut off the plant!
