Learn how to propagate any pothos plant from cuttings in the easiest, no-fuss way. I’ve outlined the basic steps below but be sure to check out the video tutorial for more in-depth pothos tips!

How to Propagate Pothos from Cuttings
Take cuttings from your pothos
Identify the nodes (growth points on the stems where leaves, aerial roots, or stems emerge). Cut just below a node, which will ensure the new cutting has a node on it to grow roots. You can see how the roots are growing from nodes in the picture above or in the video.
Put the pothos cuttings in water
Place the cuttings in a propagation station or jar of water, making sure the nodes are submerged. Keep them in bright, indirect light and refill the water as it evaporates.
Monitor the root growth
Within a few weeks, you should see roots growing from the nodes. However, don’t rely on a specific timeframe, as growth speed varies; instead, wait until the roots are two to three inches long.
Pot up the rooted cuttings
Use an appropriately sized pot with a drainage hole for your cuttings. Avoid oversized pots to prevent overwatering. Use a well-draining potting mix and water thoroughly after planting your pothos cuttings. Keep the potting mix lightly moist but not soggy as the roots adjust.
Caring for your new pothos
Pothos plants thrive in bright, indirect light, especially variegated varieties. Water when the potting mix is dry an inch or two below the surface. To grow a fuller plant, repeat the process by propagating more cuttings and planting them back into the same pot—it’s that easy!
Now learn how you can prune pothos to make it fuller at the same time that you’re propagating it!
