It’s no surprise why we cherish our variegated houseplants—they are stunning and special! But what happens when those variegated leaves start to revert to plain green? Check out my three quick tips below for maintaining and recovering lost variegated leaves. You can also watch the video for more details on these tips, examples, and what actually causes variegation in plants!

- Tip 1 – Provide plenty of light. Variegated plants need lots of bright, indirect light to maintain the lighter colors of their leaves and prevent them from reverting.
- Tip 2 – Make sure the amount of light color on the leaves is relatively balanced with the dark color. An all-white plant is not a healthy plant and won’t last long because the darker colors of the leaves help the lighter colors survive (this is oversimplifying it, so check out the video if you want more details about why).
- Tip 3 – If your plant is starting to revert, prune above the last variegated leaf on a stem for the best chance of new, variegated growth. Again, see my video for a demonstration.
