Today I’m sharing a unique DIY project—a plant hanger using a vintage tennis racket. I KNOW, It sounds weird, but I found the racket in an antique store and the idea just kind of came to me. This stylish hanger is absolutely perfect for showcasing my beloved string of hearts!

Since I redid my greenhouse cabinet a few months ago and had to take out my string of hearts, I’ve been looking for a nice way to display it. Turns out this DIY is surprisingly simple and requires minimal materials. Woohoo!

Materials Needed:

  • Vintage tennis racket
  • Chicken wire and wire cutters (you can buy them separately but this set comes with both)
  • Protective gloves for working with chicken wire
  • String of hearts or another small plant

Step 1: Cut the Chicken Wire

Using the wire cutters, and wearing protective gloves, cut a piece of chicken wire based on the size of the racket. Since I eyeballed this, I was generous with how big of a piece I cut. Better too big than too small!

Step 2: Attach the Chicken Wire

Carefully untwist the wires at the bottom of the piece of chicken wire, which is going to be the base of the basket to hold the plant.

Then, use those longer wires (that you just created by untwisting the chicken wire) to start attaching the chicken wire to the racket. I attached them by just twisting each wire around the racket’s strings

Step 3: Finalize the Shape and Size

Once you’ve got the bottom of the basket attached, pause to reassess the shape and size of the chicken wire piece. I used a jar of salsa that was roughly the size of my string of hearts’ pot to mold the chicken wire into the shape I needed.

Once you have that figured out, you can cut off any excess chicken wire from the sides if you initially cut a bigger piece than you needed. Then, repeat step two to attach each side of the chicken wire to the racket strings.

Step 4: Finishing Touches

Once you’ve finished attaching the basket, fold down any rogue wires around the basket opening and the back of the racket strings so nothing sharp is poking out.

Then, carefully put your plant in the basket. I recommend testing your project before hanging it by adding the plant and then pushing it down a little to apply some pressure and make sure all the wires are secure.

And you’re done! While this decor style may not be everyone’s cup of tea, I hope this project inspires you to explore creative ways to display your favorite plants.
